1. Outside Providence
This 1999 film based on Peter Farrelly’s novel of the same name starred Shawn Hatosy, Tommy Bone, & Alec Baldwin. Inspired by Peter’s own experiences at prep school, the film was set in Pawtucket, RI. There were also scenes filmed on the University of Rhode Island campus.
2. Me, Myself and Irene
Jim Carrey plays Charlie Baileygates, a Rhode Island state trooper with multiple personalities. Charlie’s house is in Galilee, his wedding takes place in Newport, and the local main street in the film is Narragansett Avenue in Jamestown.
3. There’s Something about Mary
Hot Club is one of our favorite after-work spots. It’s featured in this hilarious movie starring Ben Stiller, Cameron Diaz, and Matt Dillon.
4. Moonrise Kingdom
Conanicut Island in Jamestown is the scenery for much of this film starring Bill Murray, Frances McDormand, Jared Gilman, & Kara Hayward. The scout camp shown in the film is Camp Yawgoog located in Hopkinton. Other spots shown in the film include Arcadia Management Area in West Greenwich, the Sakonnet River in Portsmouth, and Fort Wetherill – a former Coast Artillery fort in Fort Wetherill State Park located in Jamestown.
5. The Great Gatsby
Some of the most famous Newport Mansions are featured in this 1974 adaptation of The Great Gatsby. Robert Redford plays Jay Gatsby, whose extravagant parties take place inside of the Rosecliff mansion on Bellevue Ave. Marble House in Newport and Linden Place mansion in Bristol can also be seen in the film.
