Being a New England staple, Dunkin’ Donuts is a part of many Rhode Islanders’ lives. Let’s face it – some of us aren’t quite human until we’ve had our medium iced extra extra.
Though it seems we’re quite familiar with DD, check out these interesting tidbits you probably never knew.
1. The first Dunkin’ Donuts was opened in 1948, going by the name of Open Kettle. In 1949, the name changed to Kettle Donuts, and finally became Dunkin’ Donuts in 1950.
2. Munchkins were introduced in 1972, but bagels weren’t offered until 1996, followed by breakfast sandwiches in 1997.
3. According to Dunkin’s website, they sell more than 30 cups of coffee every second.
4. Dunkin’ Donuts boasts that there are over 15,000 different coffee combinations available.
5. A cup of coffee used to cost 10 cents. Ah, the good ol’ days.
6. Different varieties of donuts are served around the world. If you’re ever in China, you MUST try the Curry Beef or Dry Pork & Seaweed flavors.
7. Dunkie served as DD’s mascot during the late 50s & 60s. There was even a Mr. Potato Head toy made in his honor.
8. Actor Michael Vale played Fred the Baker for 15 years, making “Time to make the doughnuts!” a household phrase. When Dunkin’ wanted to retire the character, market research showed that customers didn’t want to see his character leave. To honor Fred, they created an advertising campaign around his retirement, even hosting a parade in Boston where they gave away close to 6 million doughnuts.
9. Dunkin’ coffee experts have the important job of ensuring consistency & quality. These brave souls taste an average of 200 cups per day.
