Mental Health Awareness Month
Take the Moment
What is Mental Health Awareness Month?
Each year, millions of Americans face the reality of living with a mental health condition. During May, NAMI joins the national movement to raise awareness about mental health. Each year we fight stigma, provide support, educate the public, and advocate for policies that support people with mental illness and their families.
In 2026, the theme “Take the Moment” encourages us to prioritize our own well-being and the well-being of those around us. It’s about fostering open dialogues and ensuring that no one feels alone in their journey.

Eliminate Stigma
Stigma grows in silence. We work to shift the social narrative so that seeking help is seen as a sign of strength rather than a weakness.
Access to Care
We advocate for a healthcare system where mental health is treated with the same urgency as physical health, ensuring everyone has quality resources.
Support Systems
NAMI provides peer-led programs and support groups that offer a safe space to share experiences and find the tools needed for recovery.
Mental Health by the Numbers
- 1 in 5 U.S. adults experience mental illness each year.
- 1 in 20 U.S. adults experience serious mental illness each year.
- 1 in 6 U.S. youth aged 6-17 experience a mental health disorder each year.
- 50% of all lifetime mental illness begins by age 14, and 75% by age 24.
Help is Within Reach
If you or someone you know is struggling or in crisis, help is available 24/7.
